The United States has halted funding and recalled its engineers from a subterranean metal wall and tunnel detection network being built along the over eight-mile border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, hair
Israeli and Palestinian media have claimed.
Built under the supervision of the US Army Corps of Engineers, the $500 million project is intended to thwart an elaborate network of underground tunnels dug by Gazans to smuggle goods into the blockaded coastal strip.
But earlier this month there were unverifiable claims that Gazan welders had been paid tens of thousands of dollars to breach the completed parts of the 98-foot-deep steel wall, successfully cutting through the wall and reopening some 450 tunnels.
